  • Mail Music Monday welcomes The Postal Service

Okay, so really, any song by this band qualifies for Mail Music Monday, if only because of it's name. I chose it today because The Postal Service is actually playing in Grand Prairie, TX and this song also mentions mail — kind of a triple play.

According to wikipedia, this is how the band got it's name: “The band's name was chosen due to the way in which it produced its songs. Tamborello wrote and performed instrumental tracks and then sent the DATs to Gibbard, who edited the song as he saw fit (adding his vocals along the way), and sent them back to Tamborello through the United States Postal Service.” How cool is that?

Hope you enjoy and if you have any mail music suggestions, please send them my way!

Mail Music Monday Memorial Day 2013

Today we remember, with appreciation, the one's who died to protect freedom. I think the tone of “Houses on the Hill” by Whiskeytown is appropriate for Memorial Day. It was recommended by a friend, Neff Connor (@nffcnnr), who is well known for his photos of the Dallas/Fort Worth music scene.

I wish I could have found a louder version — you'll have to turn up the volume to here the beginning. I've included the lyrics so, if the mood strikes you, you can sing along.

    Houses on the Hill

    Songwriters: RYAN ADAMS, CAITLIN CARY

Well, I found a bunch of letters
They were written for the fellow
    Who broke your momma's heart
And the envelope folds smelled of her ancient perfume

    I'll bet she didn't know
How to respond before the blankets of snow
    Caught him out wandering alone
    With no place to go
There were stars in the sky
There were houses on the hill
    There were bottles and pills
That were easy to buy to keep her warm
    From the oncoming storm

Well, I found them in the northwest corner of the attic
In a box labeled “Tinsel and Lights”
Didn't know what I was looking for
Maybe just a blanket or artifacts

    Eisenhower sent him to war
He kept her picture in his pocket that was closest to his heart
    And when he hit shore
It must have been a target
    For the gun-men
There were stars in the sky
There were bunkers on the hill
And there were caskets to fill where he would lie
Shrouded in the red, white & blue with the stripes

There were stars in the sky
There were houses on the hill
    There were bottles and pills
That were easy to buy to keep her warm
    From the oncoming storm

Mail Music Monday for National Dog Bite Prevention Week 2013

Not too many songs mention mail and dog bites so, I'm going to use the same one I used last year. It's by Dave Matthews Band and  the official video doesn't offend me but it has some images that I worried might be NSFW so I'm using this one.

I like this song but I hope that by next year, I've found another that meets the requirements for Mail Music Monday and National Dog Bite Prevention Week. But if I use this one again, I ask you, “What Would You Say?”
