  • It’s Mail Music Monday nothing’s gonna change my world.

This Wednesday (Oct 9) is John Lennon's birthday. October 9 is also World Post Day and October is National Stamp Collection Month and John Lennon was a stamp collector so I had to use one of his songs for this week's Mail Music Monday. I've used this mail music song before but this version of Across the Universe is performed by John's son, Sean, Rufus Wainwright and Moby.

I think they do it beautifully, what do you think?

Mail Music Monday gets ready for National Stamp Collecting Month

I know that today is still September but Tuesday is October 1 and kicks off National Stamp Collecting Month. So my challenge became finding songs about stamp collections or stamp collecting. You may be surprised to know that I found several. What's weird to me is that most of them are 5 minutes long or longer.

I like this one and it's not too long. It's by Kimya Dawson of the Moldy Peaches and it's called “So Nice So Smart”. It was featured in the movie Juno, which I really liked.

I've been thinking a lot about how much I wish I'd started a collection years ago. With mail volume dwindling, I think that some stamp collections will become even bigger gold mines. And when you think of the tiny investment it takes to get stamps when they're new, well, some people who started a long time ago can be sitting on a fortune that cost very little to amass.

I'd love to hear about your stamp collection, if you have one. Or tell me which is your favorite of all stamps. And thank you for stopping to take a listen to today's Mail Music Monday.

Mail Music Monday celebrates Ray Charles Forever

September 23, 1930 a musical genius was born. As a matter of fact, Frank Sinatra called him “the only true genius in show business.” Born Ray Charles Robinson, he became known to the world as Ray Charles.

Today, on what would have been his 83rd birthday, he's being honored in dual ceremonies by the U.S. Postal Service with the release of the Ray Charles forever stamp. The ceremony in Los Angeles, California will be held at the GRAMMY Museum and the ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia will be held at the Ray Charles Performing Arts Center at Morehouse College.

In conjunction to the stamp release, Concord Music Group is releasing a new CD/DVD combo titled “Ray Charles Forever” which includes previously unreleased and rare performances. A special edition of the package will be available at the U.S. Post Office with a bonus track, “I Didn't Know What Time It Was.” I believe that the special edition is a U.S.P.S. exclusive but have not confirmed that.

Because it contains the lyrics, “Like a stamp on a letter, if you let me stick with you” I think this Mail Music Monday song would have been perfect for the “Ray Charles Forever” CD but it's not one of the tracks on it. I still think it's the perfect Mail Music song for the dedication of the last of the 2013 Music Icons series.
